❏ A wave is a vibratory motion which transmits energy along a medium without the movement of the medium.
❖ Classification of waves.
1. Mechanical waves: This is a type of wave that requires a material medium for their propagation. Examples includes: water waves, sound waves e.t.c.
2. Electromagnectic waves: This are waves that do not require a medium for their propagation. Examples includes: gamma rays, x rays e.t.c.
3. Longitudnal waves: This are waves with direction of motion parallel to the direction of propagation. Examples are:sound waves, waves in strings with one end fixed.
4. Transverse waves: This are waves with direction of motion perpendicular to the direction of propagation. Examples are: water waves,electromagnectic waves e.t.c.
❖ Description of waves[ wave terms] ❏ Amplitude: maximum displacement from the rest or equilibrum position of a wave
❏ Crest & Trough: maximum and minimum positions in a transverse wave.
❏ Compressions & Rarefaction: maximum and minimum in a longitudnal wave.
PROPERTIES OF WAVES.
❖ Reflection of waves: this is the change in direction of a wavefront at an interface between two different media so that the wavefronts returns into the medium which it originated.All waves can undergo reflection.
❖ Refraction: this involves the change in direction of waves when they collide with an obstacle.
❖ Diffraction: this involves a change in direction of waves as they travel through corners or around obstacles.
❖ Polarisation: this is a phenomenon wereby a wave travels or vibrates only in one plane.
Note: only TRANSVERSE WAVES can undergo polarisation. STUDY HARD AND HAVE A NICE DAY.
